ATP-CTP is a required training step for the FAA airplane multiengine ATP knowledge-test pathway described in 14 CFR 61.156. It is not an FAA licence conversion, a flight-time approval, an ATP practical test, or a guarantee that an applicant satisfies every ATP requirement.
Four Decisions That Must Stay Separate
A provider decides whether it can enroll you and what identity or pilot credentials it requires. Admission is not an FAA ATP eligibility decision.
The authorized course covers the academic and simulator training required by 14 CFR 61.156 for the airplane multiengine ATP knowledge-test pathway.
The ATP-CTP graduation certificate is the required authorization for the ATM knowledge test. Whether a provider includes the test fee or scheduling must be confirmed separately.
Passing the knowledge test does not issue an ATP certificate. Age, certificate, aeronautical experience, English, practical-test and other applicable requirements remain.
Course Admission Is Not Final ATP Eligibility
A foreign CPL or ATPL holder may be accepted by an authorized ATP-CTP provider before every FAA ATP experience requirement is complete. Before booking, ask which documents the provider requires, how it records a foreign licence number, whether the course is authorized for the intended pathway, and exactly what the package includes.
ATP-CTP and the ATM Knowledge Test
The FAA testing matrix identifies an ATP-CTP graduation certificate from an authorized provider as the required authorization for the Airline Transport Pilot Multiengine Airplane knowledge test. The course and the test are separate steps.

The 1,500-Hour Rule and Restricted ATP
The standard airplane ATP pathway is often summarized as “1,500 hours,” but total time is only one part of the aeronautical-experience rules. Cross-country, night, instrument, category/class and PIC or qualifying SIC experience can also matter.
Restricted ATP pathways under 14 CFR 61.160 apply only when the applicant fits a specified regulatory category and satisfies the corresponding requirements. Foreign university study or foreign military experience should not be assumed to qualify without checking the rule and documentation.
Common Foreign-Pilot Misunderstandings
- A foreign ATPL does not automatically become an FAA ATP.
- Completing ATP-CTP does not prove that all flight-time requirements are met.
- Passing the ATM test does not issue an FAA certificate.
- A certificate based on a foreign licence under 14 CFR 61.75 is not the same as an independent FAA commercial certificate.
- A type-rating course and an ATP practical-test pathway may sometimes be coordinated, but should not be assumed to be interchangeable.
What to Verify Before Booking
- Which FAA certificate and aircraft class you are pursuing.
- Your total, cross-country, night, instrument, multiengine and qualifying PIC/SIC hours.
- Whether the provider is currently authorized for ATP-CTP.
- Whether the ATM test, travel, lodging or rescheduling costs are included.
- Whether a type rating or practical test is part of the same booking or a separate service.
