Core ATP requirement categories

The FAA ATP path is not one single question. Most pilots need to look at age, English proficiency, medical certificate, underlying pilot certificate, knowledge test, practical test, aeronautical experience and ATP-CTP where applicable.

AgeGenerally 23 for unrestricted ATP; Restricted ATP may apply for some qualifying pilots.

Certificate baseA commercial pilot certificate with appropriate category and class privileges is commonly part of the path.

Flight timeUnrestricted ATP is commonly associated with 1,500 hours total time, plus specific experience categories.

What ATP-CTP includes

ATP-CTP is a required training program before the multiengine airplane ATP knowledge test for many applicants. Under 14 CFR 61.156, the course includes academic training and FSTD training requirements.

Provider examples to compare

The FAA publishes a PDF list of certificate holders authorized to conduct ATP CTP. Examples on the current FAA list include Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, CAE SimuFlite, FlightSafety International, Pan Am International Flight Academy, ATP Jet Simulation, Airbus North America Customer Services, and others.

Confirm the provider appears on the FAA authorized ATP CTP list.
Compare course dates, locations, simulator access, and total invoice items.
Ask how soon the ATP knowledge test can be scheduled after completion.
Request cancellation, rescheduling, and document readiness policies before paying.

Foreign CPL to FAA pathway questions

A foreign CPL holder may need to separate licence verification, FAA certificate strategy, medical planning, instrument privileges, ATP-CTP timing, and eventual ATP eligibility.
